Medical engineer Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) and Astronaut Matt Kowalski (George Clooney) find themselves adrift in space after an accident destroys the Space Shuttle Explorer. Alfonso Cuarón’s long awaited follow-up to Children Of Men is a battle for survival as they search for a means of getting back to Earth; all the while in the path of a relentless cloud of space debris.

Gravitas:

- Gravity is a masterclass of filmmaking in every area. Acting, writing, directing, photography, editing, sound design... They all come together to make something beautiful, intense and incredibly entertaining.

- A very intimate contained thriller, set quite literally on the edge of oblivion. The characters are explored effectively and with great directness against a backdrop that’s never anything but stunning.

- From the Space Shuttle being destroyed, to the final sequence, it’s stuffed with moments that will go down as iconic.

- There’s nothing to carry sound in space, which would be enough to fear the score would become overdone and annoying. In the hands of someone else maybe it would’ve been, but this is yet another masterclass.

- See it in 3D at the IMAX if you can. It’s not gimmicky 3D, it really adds another dimension… quite literally.

Zero Gravity:

- After the cinematic release is done, then comes VOD/Blu-Ray. Unless you have a 160 inch 3DTV with surround sound designed by NASA, don’t bother.

- Astronaut George Clooney’s wife left him. In itself establishing a theme that there’s no hope for any of us.

- Would it have been better not casting bona fide movie stars? Probably not, but I’m running out of ideas.

- You may have trouble breathing for a few days.

- You’ll probably never see anything this good ever again!

It’s breathless. It’s tense, funny, gripping, from beginning to end. It’s unlike anything else, delivering a welcome reminder of what a visceral experience cinema can be. Gravity is undoubtedly the film of the year and an instant sci-fi classic.

Surprising, somehow. Doesn't make me feel old, but yeah.

I remember clearly when she was starting out on her career. I was there at the beginning.
