To celebrate the oncoming CG Resident Evil film - "Resident Evil: Degeneration", I've decided to come up with a Top 10 Facts about the game!

1. “Resident Evil” or “Biohazard” as it is better known in Japan, was renamed as the former name for Western release in order to avoid copyright infringement with New York 80s punk-metal band “Biohazard”.

2. For main developer Shinji Mikami, his main inspiration behind the “Resident Evil” was from an earlier movie tie-in game produced by Capcom in 1989 called “Sweet Home” for the NES. The premise is similar with 5 people exploring a mansion except this time the enemies are paranormal as opposed to George A. Romero zombies.

3. Speaking of George A. Romero, he was also commissioned to write a script for the original film adaptation of the first “Resident Evil” game. Notably, his script was comparatively much closer to the game then the Paul W.S. Anderson version with a few minor changes including extra characters not in the game (for more deaths scenes) and Chris Redfield not being a member of STARS while also being Jill Valentine’s lover.

4. Although Sony Pictures nixed his script, Romero did direct a Japanese commercial for “Biohazard 2” (Resident Evil 2) starring the late Brad Renfro as the game’s main antagonist, “Leon S. Kennedy”.

5. Sienna Guillory portrayed Jill Valentine as the first cross-over playable character from the games into the movies for Paul W.S. Anderson’s “Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004)” along with Oded Fehr as “Carlos Olivera”. Other notable game characters to be brought to life for the big screen include Ali Larter as “Claire Redfield” and Jason O’Mara as “Albert Wesker” in “Resident Evil: Extinction (2007)” – the final installment in the “Resident Evil” film trilogy.

6. There were many reasons why the original “Resident Evil” game was able to reach cult status with Western audiences from the gore, the B-movie horror elements and the purportedly intentionally bad script, although some say it’s a simple case of “Engrish”. Such classic lines as when Barry proclaims Jill as “The Master of Unlocking” having given her a lock-pick or commenting on how she could have been a “Jill Sandwich” once he rescues her from a room with descending ceiling.

Resident Evil - The Porno (for the Blind)

7. In a cute acknowledgement of games-imitating-films-imitating-games, “Resident Evil 4” features a sequence where main character, “Leon S. Kennedy” must dodge and evade high-intensity lasers that have been built to attack the player in formations, similar to the laser sequence in the first Resident Evil film.

8. There have been several versions of Resident Evil games that were scrapped for completely new re-imaginings although footage of “Resident Evil 1.5” (which later became “Resident Evil 2”) and “Resident Evil 3.5” (which became “Resident Evil 4”) can be found on YouTube. The most notable aspects of these beta-builds included female character Elza Walker in place of Claire Redfield in RE2 and RE3.5 featuring paranormal aspects as the main source of scares, again in reference to “Sweet Home” (1987).

Resident Evil 1.5:

Resident Evil 3.5:

9. “Rebecca Chambers”, who is the main protagonist of GameCube game “Resident Evil 0” as well as appearing in other games in the series, is actually based on J-Pop sensation Ayumi Hamasaki whom also happened to be the spokesperson for that game during promotion in Japan.

10. The very first Resident Evil game released on the Sony PlayStation in 1996 is the only game to feature live-action actors and sequences as means to the introduce and end the game. Every other game following has used either CGI or in-game graphics during cut-scenes. Hmmm... I wonder why...

Anyone else know any insider info on this awesome game?

Very well researched list.

For some reason, I'd be all over the new Resident Evil CG movie if it was in 3D, but as it isn't, I have no interest. It's just too close to a game cutscene as it is.

...It's not in 3D is it?

Nope. No 3D for you Sheridan! It's funny you mention it because at second glance it does look like one long RE cut-scene! Just imagine The Polar Express with 10 times as much gore but only half as scary...

George A Romero also directed the Resident Evil 2 trailer, which is far better than all of Paul W.S. Wankerson's movies combined.

Also - Umbrella Chronicles features *the* laser hallway from the first movie, as well as the Red Queen, with a brief mention of the White Queen from the movies. Fascinating stuff.

Of course, I'm writing my dissertation on this, so I love it.

And Degeneration... love it.

Have you heard what's going to be included in Resi 5?

Dude. Resident Evil dissertation. Awesome! Can you share what the title of your piece will be and will we also get to see it uploaded on Movie-Moron? I would love to read what you have to say about it man.

On a sidenote... WHAT D'YA MEAN RACISM IN RE5?Huh? What? You mean Chris Redfield is going to start wearing a pointy white smurf hat and terrorising all the "moggies" (to quote Black Hawk Down)? How does racism fit into a game about zombie-type-ish survival horror? Please explain because my brain is frying as we speak...

As soon as this trailer came out, a lot of folk started questioning the portrayal of people of colour, and the fact they're being killed by a white guy in a military uniform.

In the midst of this controversy, someone made this video. Remember this is satire:

Yes, very good tongue-in-cheek video there. I can't believe some people actually thought there were racial connotations behind it. Maybe they SHOULD be looking at the people over in Spain welcoming Lewis Hamilton as a blatant example of racism? Oh well, our first deep thread on Movie-Moron and its under my Top 10 Resident Evil Facts article! Oh the controversy!!!

Okay, I didn't mean the racism stuff, but now you've brought it up - nobody gave two shits about murdering white spanish people in Resi 4 and the change of scenery is only a brave move for the better.

What I actually meant was that I'd read about Resi 5's plot snippets. Apparently it's going to end the Albert Wesker/ Umbrella storyline and will feature Sherry Birkin (who must about 18 or 20 by now) and Steve Burnside (RECVX) as the monster under Wesker's control. It's also going to be the first game to feature Oswald E Spencer, the last remaining Umbrella Founder (I guess his cameo in Umbrella Chronicles doesn't count...)

Anyway, it's going to be worth buying a 360 just to kick Wesker's ass.

And my dissertation will be on the Resi franchise. According to my tutor, I'm going to be "using the franchise to disprove the current adaptation theory". Whatever that means. I'm busy doing all the other crap my Uni's got me doing. Bah!

Hey ad4m22, you figured what adaptation theory means? It's not to do with the evolution of traits in species that ensure survival is it?

Um... no. I'm apparently using Resident Evil as a model with which to state that comparing sources to the text is wrong.

For instance, Resi (the game) was inspired by Night of the Living Dead and Sweet Home. NotLD was inspired by I Am Legend (the novel.) So in comparing the game to the film, you need to take all this into account.

Another for instance, the Resi movies steal from Aliens, Alien Ressurection, The Cube and The Birds. So you have to think about how they shaped the trilogy as well as the games.

I think, anyway.

Has anyone here seen all three of the movies, because I'll admit that I'm ashamed to say I've seen the first two (saw the sequel in theaters unfortunately).  Feel free to deny having seen all three, I wouldn't want that to be public knowledge either.

But anyways, I totally got myself some Leon Kennedy garb to wear for Halloween.  A friend of mine is getting a Jill costume together, it's gonna be a major nerd-fest this October.

I have also only seen the first two but neither in the cinemas unfortunately. I still think the first film was alright as a brainless popcorn flick, but the second one was SO bad! Dude, you have to post the pictures of your costumes y'know. Don't worry. Cos-play is welcome at Movie-Moron.... (right, Sheridan?)

Hey, Sulphix, I've been trying to get my girlfriend to dress as Jill for ages, what's your secret? I keep suggesting the STARS uniform, because her escape outfit is waaay too undignified for her.

Wait, there's other people here. Shit.

Yeah, I saw all three in the cinema. I don't know why, they were all abominations and I really should have done something else. Proudest thing? Getting three other people to go with me to Extinction. Then getting drunk and forgetting all about it.

Here's an article that I think sums up the RE5 argument very nicely...
