Star Trek pushed back to May 2009

Paramount has decided to release the new Star Trek film in May 2009 instead of the previously announced date of Christmas 2008.

Paramount has said that the shift is not due to script or talent problems, but rather that the film has a better chance at the box office next summer than it would have this holiday season.

This could be a good thing. The film is currently nearing completion of the filming stage. The shift will allow for much more post-production time.

This could also be bad news, because now Star Trek will come out 2 weeks after the new X Men film.

Good or bad news? You decide.

As a fan, it is a shame to have to wait so much longer.

For the studio, 2 weeks after the new X Men film is plenty. A fortnight is a long time in movie box office these days. If there's nothing else in May this is a very sensible move. They may have benefitted from the writers strike leaving the early summer clearer than it might have been.

On the other hand, J.J. Abrams had said he was frustrated at being prevented from make script changes as the writers strike went on. Now that it's over, there will be some reshoots, despite what the studio says.
