Cloverfield director Matt Reeves is officially in talks with Paramount to direct the sequel.

But… he’s already attached to helm ‘The Invisible Woman’, a thriller about a former beauty queen who turns to a life of crime to protect her family.

Which would you rather see? Yeah, me too.

Paramount seemingly feels the same way, because today it was confirmed that the writer, Drew Goddard, has been signed to start penning the follow up.

Expect Reeves to do the next Cloverfield before anything else.

So news on the Cloverfield 2 production is coming in thick and fast, and considering how quickly the first one was shot (they hadn’t even filmed a single scene when the trailer came out in July, but it was in cinemas by January), expect the turnaround to be speedy on this too.

Don’t be surprised if you see the sequel same time, same place next year.

The ‘annual tactic’ has worked out very well for the Saw series - they pump out a follow up every 12 months, and reap huge financial reward. And don’t forget the Blair Witch sequel hit cinemas only 12 months after the original too (ok, we’d rather forget the Blair Witch sequel, but there you go). In short, there is a massive hunger for everything Cloverfield right now, and like every fad, interest will fade, so they know it’s worth many more millions of dollars if they can do things, like, now.

Don't get me wrong, I liked Cloverfield. I just don't know if I'd be interested in a sequel.

Hi dudes, greetings from Argentina...

I think, they must do the sequel right now, before the interesting of the fans drop down...and i guess there it be more than one movie, like prequel and diferent points of view of the same attack. Whatever, i think it will be funny however...

I just can't see where they can go with a sequel unless they go the 'monsters source' route, in which case i'll personally flour bomb Abrams house.

I would love to see them try do a sequel. I just can't imagine it being a real-time thing like the first film where the action happens as they see it. Greetings Buaku, I do agree with you to some extent over "striking while the iron is still hot" in the sense that it would be difficult to generate hype around a sequel that isn't similar in premise to the first (i.e. if they went the documentary route for example) but then again, lots of people saw this film and they will pay again to see the sequel in even bigger numbers.

But imagine this: WHAT IF... the monster disappears back into the sea? Then, imagine there is a TV news crew doing a live report from ground zero and THEN the monster comes back? It would make more sense for the TV crew to be following the thing around again (with possibly higher picture quality)....

Or, they could just do the documentary route where the piece together different eye-witness reports of the thing but not really have an actual sci-fi action/horror movie while doing it. Ach, i don't know. Let JJ Abrams figure it out...  Undecided

I've always imagined that the sequel will involve the rescue effort in Manhattan.  But, then again, I also think a gimmick movie such as this (albeit a well done gimmick movie) is better left an isolated affair.  Oh well, we'll know soon enough when the viral marketing campaign begins again.  I can't wait to dissect a trailer of nothing for another five months.
