Brought to you by the department of the not-strictly-revelant: McG's horrific pilot for an American version of Spaced has been nixed by the network. The treasured series, a cultural benchmark for a generation of English teenegers and 20-somethings, the precursor of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, is safe once more from the hands of The Man - The Man in this case being Charlie's Angels director McG.

Another instance of the power of the internet? Edgar Wright blogged his displeasure about the proposal many months ago and was met by a vast swell of fan support from both sodes of the ocean. It seems that Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright were not consulted about the intended remake, and Jessica Stevenson's name wasn't even mentioned in the promotional blurb; though the blame for this is being placed firmly with the Suits at Fox, it reeked of Bad Idea.

It was NEVER going to work. Given Fox's track record, that almost guaranteed they would surge on with it anyway.

However, it seems the miasma surrounding the project just wouldn't clear, the fans have stood their ground, good sense has prevailed, and we're all safe. From whatever the hell abomination it could have been. I for one am going to celebrate by having a Spaced marathon. Now, if only more films could be saved in the same way (Hi, Speed Racer. The internet didn't care enough to stop you from being made. There's the door, don't let it hit you in the arse on the way out. Bye!).

Can't wait for this to be released on American soil. This year ... July I believe. Never seen it, never heard of it before last month, but judging from Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz I'll buy it without even renting it first!

Thank Christ on a bike. Spaced is too good to be tainted by the hand of McG. It would have ended in tears, like the American version of Coupling a few years back. There are some things that just don't translate, and Spaced is one of them.
