It might all be rumours, but it looks like there are plans to "reboot" (what an good choice of phrase) Robocop.
I'm a fan of the first one, even twenty odd years after it was made.  I'm quite like the Robocop 2, even if I struggle with some parts of it.  I HATED the third one.  "HATED" might be a bit mild.  I thought it was total crap. What the hell was going on with that? Don't even get me started on the TV series... Jesus christ!...

I can't say I'm against the remake, but wherever or not another director would be able to capture the pokes and jokes at the grand old American way of life is unknown..  For those of you might be in the dark as the original, the following is a brief idea of the plot:

Alex J. Murphy (Peter Weller), one of Morton's "prime candidates", is savagely murdered while trying to arrest a gang led by Clarence J. Boddicker (Kurtwood Smith). Murphy is pronounced dead in the hospital, and his body is rebuilt by OCP as the prototype for a cyborg police officer, with the hardware of a robot and the "instincts" of a policeman.

I had similar ideas of rebooting this franchise, but then I bought Robocop on DVD. You CANNOT remake the original movie, Its just great the way it is. The cruxification, ressurection and ultimate salvation of the human soul is one of the things that makes this movie great . Not alot of people understand or see the religious overtones that this movie bring to the table (Christ walking on water is referenced with a shot of Robocop walking over a puddle near the end), and Robocop is not your average action flick. More people can see and understand the corporate satire though, and that along with the sutble religious overtones adds to what is one of Paul Verhoevens greatest achievments.

Reboot this franchise and Robocop will be screwed in this day and age of cheap shot writers and we will end up with a Trilogy of Robocop 3's. I,d rather just savour the successful entry to the old franchise.

Yeah, I've got this coming on Netflix. I remember playing as Robocop when I was a kid, but I'm not sure if I ever saw the movie.
