In a recent interview with The Times, Guillermo Del Toro has stated that he would rather stay faithful to the original Hobbit material as opposed to appropriating the style of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Ring's Trilogy.

Quote
I’m trying to be faithful to what I read when I was young. That’s The Hobbit I’m serving. I cannot serve a Peter Jackson film. We also hope to bridge the trilogy.

Fan's of Pan's Labyrinth and the Hellboy movies will be glad to hear that he will be adding his own unique vision into the mix ( so expect lots of clockwork and terrifying makeup effects) when asked if he would be weaving his own recurring themes into the movie he replied:

Quote
Of course I will. It’s a proclivity, a compulsion.

I have only watched The Lord of the Rings trilogy through once and they really didn't excite me as much as I had hoped, so to me this news can only be a good thing. However I realise that to many, these films ARE the definitive Lord of the Rings and as such I am wondering what fan backlash this  will cause (if any).

I think it would be pretty silly to carry on a vision that's not your own.  So good on Del Toro!  Can't wait to see what he comes up with.  Although I am still gutted Peter Jackson is not the one spear heading this project.

To be honest, Del Toro is moving to New Zealand for four years to work on the hobbit movies with Jackson as producer so I think it's likely we'll see a melding of the two men's styles. Hopefully it won't be a 'too many cooks' situation.

I have heard that the Hobbit might be split in to two films.

Does anyone know if this is true?

Yes, it's two films. The first follows the book, the second is new material that will bridge the time between The Hobbit and Fellowship Of The Ring.

From the talkbacks with Del Toro and Jackson the bridge movie will be culled from Tolkeins notes and countless random and unpublished pieces. It will all originate from his work, but some of it probably hasn't been in novel form.
