In a recent interview with The Times, Guillermo Del Toro has stated that he would rather stay faithful to the original Hobbit material as opposed to appropriating the style of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Ring's Trilogy.
I’m trying to be faithful to what I read when I was young. That’s The Hobbit I’m serving. I cannot serve a Peter Jackson film. We also hope to bridge the trilogy.
Fan's of Pan's Labyrinth and the Hellboy movies will be glad to hear that he will be adding his own unique vision into the mix ( so expect lots of clockwork and terrifying makeup effects) when asked if he would be weaving his own recurring themes into the movie he replied:
Of course I will. It’s a proclivity, a compulsion.
I have only watched The Lord of the Rings trilogy through once and they really didn't excite me as much as I had hoped, so to me this news can only be a good thing. However I realise that to many, these films ARE the definitive Lord of the Rings and as such I am wondering what fan backlash this will cause (if any).
